Dedicated Supervision: From Policy to Practice

In 2023, our Ivorian government partners signed a new national community health strategy with support from Muso’s technical assistance experts embedded within the Department of Community Health. This strategy aims to transform a network of volunteers into a national workforce of more than 10,000 Community Health Workers (CHWs) and includes dedicated supervision, a component of Muso's approach designed to improve the quality, coverage, and speed of care.

In Q2, the government initiated the implementation of dedicated supervision in six districts (Loh Djiboua, Goh, Bélier, Guemon, Bafing, and Haut-Sassandra), with plans for gradual nationwide expansion. Over the next three years, over 8,200 CHWs serving over 6.3 million people across 53

districts will receive support from dedicated supervisors. During the official launch ceremony in May, Dr. Amadou Beydi Cissé, Muso’s Country Director, Côte d’Ivoire, delivered a speech on behalf of technical and financial partners. He praised the Department of Community Health for this initiative and highlighted its successful implementation in Mali and Côte d’Ivoire, specifically in the health districts of Madinani and Adzopé. Olivier Gnissan, Muso’s Digital Products Implementation Supervisor, Côte d’Ivoire, demonstrated the use of the Community Health Toolkit (CHT) - a mobile application developed by Muso’s longtime partner, Medic Mobile. Seydou Traoré, Muso’s Government Partnerships Manager, Côte d’Ivoire, also provided an overview of the pilot project for dedicated supervision and outlined the next phases of implementation.


Muso is excited to continue collaborating with our Ivorian government partners. The adoption of the new strategy in 2023 came on the heels of several years of advocacy and technical assistance conducted by Muso specialists embedded within the Department of Community Health (DSC), which has consisted of contributing to the drafting of the new strategic plan and leading to the development of the costing strategy through the support of Muso’s Healthcare Financing Specialist. Most recently, these specialists have played a crucial role in developing and revising training manuals on dedicated supervision for frontline health workers, effectively supporting the launch of the first phase of the implementation.


Our team looks forward to advancing this collaboration with our partners to ensure that CHWs receive the necessary support to deliver quality care to patients.
